Sweet, Romantic Beauty

In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, I wanted to share some recent romantic beauty work!

FullSizeRender-2

Skin prep is everything. This is a shot of some current favorites including Weleda Skincare, Cover FX, Josie Maran & Caudalie. I prefer to use natural or more ‘clean’ beauty primers and skincare as they are not overly pumped up with silicone or irritating fragrances. You know how I feel about my natural, organic and vegan friendly beauty products!

This bride loved a good shine on the eyes but wanted to look refined, sophisticated and polished for her wedding day. I used Becca Cosmetics Shimmering Skin Perfector across the eye lids, a light wash of Chantecaille blush through the crease to giver her eyes subtle definition and of course a fine strip of eye lashes. The skin is looking gorgeous with a blend of Marula Oil and Mehron’s Celebre Pro Foundation for the perfect balance of comfort.

I had the pleasure of doing DJ Gina Turner‘s makeup and we were loving a clean makeup look with sleek hair inspired by a couple mutual beauty inspirations. Her hair was prepped with Big Fat Hair Amplifying Mist  and a low heat hair straightener to get her hair looking extra smooth. I finished her hair off with a quick application of Morrocanoil for that healthy high shine. On the eyes I used a few Make Up For Ever matte Artist Eye Shadows, Inglot Gel Eyeliner and a generous coat of L’Oreal Voluminous for the perfect ‘day glam’ eye. On the skin, I mixed RCMA foundation and Gina’s own Mac BB Creme for an ultra sheer look and added YSL Touche Eclat lightly to illuminate the eye contour. Her skin was finished off with a small amount of Graftobian Pro Loose Powder, Make Up Forever Blush, Cover FX Matte Bronzer. On the lips is a Dior Lip Pencil, Dior Addict Lipstick mixed with a touch of Josie Maran Infinity Cream.

This beauty was attending an engagement party and is a minimal makeup wearer. I mixed Pure Marula Oil with Mehron Celebre HD Foundation to perfect the skin and used a touch of Jane Iredale Mineral powder to softly define the cheeks. On her eyes is Make Up For Ever Eye Shadows and on the lips is Laura Gellar.

This bride wanted to keep a natural makeup look for her engagement party as she opts for a signature winged eyeliner and low maintenance makeup in her daily life. I used a pair of lashes from Frends Beauty and Inglot Gel Eyeliner with a few warm eye shadows to accentuate her eye shape. On the lips is my new favorite nude lip liner – OCC Makeup ‘Trick’ Lip Pencil and a mix of 3 lipsticks from a custom palette I made. For the bare skin look I used Urban Decay Vitamin B6 Facial mist, Mehron Celebre Foundation and Cover FX Cream Concealer set with Graftobian Pro Loose Setting Powder. I loved the total look and love the traditional clothing paired with this more modern makeup look.

I wish I had taken a few beauty close ups but here is a photo of my beautiful client on her wedding day with her daughter. The photos she sent me were so amazing – look at this location! I did a glam smokey eye on the bride with sculpted cheek bones and a creamy neutral rose lipstick. I styled her hair with a NUME Reverse Curling wand and set the hair with a generous few sprays of Dry Bar Triple Sec spray. Her daughter’s hair was a bit more bohemian with a braided overlapping half up style and romantic waves for her long, thick hair. Her makeup was pretty minimal as she had a gorgeous baby face so I groomed her brows a bit, gave her a good coat of mascara and liquid liner and added just a wash of color to her cheeks and lips with Becca Beach Tint.

My Makeup Inspirations of 2014

Although the constant annoyance of instagram eyebrows and drag cut creases flood beauty social media, I find happiness in following some of my favorite industry makeup artists who really know how to throw down some flawless glam. I thought it was appropriate to post about what inspires me as an artist since I often read timid emails from clients afraid to look overly made up.

My makeup philosophy is that skin should look like skin and enhancing natural features never goes out of trend. Unless there is an editorial shoot that requires heavy duty creative texture, the majority of my work revolves around creating the perfect ‘no makeup-makeup’ skin and varying degrees of glam on eyes and lips.

Here are a few makeup artists that have inspired me this year.

Anthony Nguyen, the king of versatility. This year I have been obsessed with Anthony’s work because he transitions from bare faced raw beauty to ridiculous precision. I can’t get enough of watching his artistry and hope I can run into him somewhere in LA in 2015. I would die for just a quick chat or watching him work for a few minutes.

Lisa Eldridge, the master of Chic. The thing I admire about Ms Eldridge is her take on skin. She has such a giant list of high profile clients but isn’t afraid to offer her intimate thoughts on skin care, how to build up a makeup look and at the same time keeps everything very modern. Her personal style and makeup technique is classic, refreshing and totally chic.

Pati Dubroff, the makeup icon. Pati Dubroff is so effortless and a true makeup icon; her beauty work is gorgeous, timeless and keeps me so in love with artistry. What I love most about Pati’s energy is that you can tell her passion for makeup by listening to her speak but when you look at her work it’s never overdone, just right on even in her more elaborate makeup images.

Etienne Ortega, the glam specialist. Though serious blending is what makes Etienne’s makeup so flawless it is the attention to detail that I love. There’s something about the way he cleans up the complexion with the perfect balance of softness that has me always excited to see his work. The struggle is crazy making skin look like skin especially with the full coverage makeup looks he creates for red carpet and celebrity so it is absolutely a pair of masterful hands he has.

Gregory Arlt, Makeup Risk Taker. I’ve always loved the artful eye Gregory Arlt has with his makeup but this year he has transformed one of my all time glam inspirations, Gwen Stefani with such beautiful taste. She is of course known for the red lip but she’s really come into some serious makeup moments with Gregory featuring glitter, nude lips and crazy beautiful skin. But seriously, Gwen doesn’t age – Am I right?

Spring Makeup Inspiration

There must be something about the familiar Socal sun post a few gloomy weather days that makes me cling to cheerful spring beauty with feminine glossy pink lips and clean radiant skin. I almost never go for the same makeup look multiple times in a one week span but this refreshing contemporary chic spring color story has been my go-to makeup of the day three times in the past seven days. Here are a few favorite products I’ve been using to achieve a dewy complexion & wearable spring lip look.

*** All of the photos in this post feature the products mentioned below for a glowing complexion and glossy pink lips!

An idea Spring complexion should look and feel effortlessly transparent. Of course the right skin care regime including a routine of proper exfoliation provides an easy canvas for overall skin clarity but a key component is the right foundation. Choose a foundation formula that offers coverage without a heavy texture and a natural glowing finish. My current spring complexion picks are Koh Gen Do Aqua Foundation & Chantecaille Future Skin Foundation. Koh Gen Do Aqua Foundation leaves the skin looking flawless with a satin finish and liquid airy feel. It features hydration boosting ingredients like natural vegetable glycerin and algae to extend the feeling of comfort while diffusing imperfections with mineral pigments. Chantecaille Future Skin Foundation is an innovative oil free gel foundation made with ingredients like Chamomile, antioxidants and sea weed to smooth and perfect the skin’s natural appearance. It offers a buildable coverage and photographs beautifully!

For lips there is nothing quite like a soft pink lip to bring a delicate charm to a spring makeup look. Coming from a major lip product junkie, it is difficult to choose a favorite pink lip but a couple current obsessions are Urban Decay Revolution Lipsticks and Too Faced La Creme Color Drenched Lipsticks. Urban Decay’s sleek gun metal packaging houses a high impact pigment paired with a comfortable creamy lip bullet. Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick in shade Protest is a perfect pink that marries edgy and femme for a powerful pout. Too Faced La Creme Lipstick formula leaves lips feeling supple and plump with just enough color to brighten any makeup look. Shade Marshmallow Bunny from Too Faced is a sweet pink so perfect for a day to night makeup look. Pair either of these with Chantecaille Luminous Lipgloss in Framboise – a vibrant strawberry hue.

Keep it simple for spring!  Will you try this easy makeup look?

Makeup Medicine

This morning I woke up feeling very nasal and sick but that’s nothing a Soy Caramel Machiatto, a lot of water and makeup can’t fix.

It sounds ridiculous but makeup transforms my mood all the time. Whatever emotion I’m feeling there is always a calm that hits my body when I pick up a makeup brush and start creating the perfect blend. Since my throat and nose was causing me to feel low energy, I picked up my colorful Crown Brush palette that I purchased during a Hautelook Beauty Sale last month and started pairing random colors together.

Here is my makeup of the day that got me out of my sick funk:

What I used: Prepped my skin first with Jurlique Hydrating Lavender mist, Chantecaille UV50, vbeaute Eye Never EYe Cream, Cargo Cosmetics Chestnut through my brows, Dior Forever Foundation #030, Cover FX concealer G30, Dior Matte Bronzer #003, Koh Gen Do UV translucent powder, Motives Cosmetics Lipgloss in Passion, Dior Lash Maximizer, Eyeko Black Magic Mascara & Crown Brush Palette (the cobalt blue, dark purple and pale blue shades)

Gold Eyes + Pink Lips

As far back as I can remember in my makeup memories, gold and pink has always been a go to color combination when I can’t decide what to wear. Fast, multi-dimensional and just neutral enough to pair with any fashion picks this wearable duo is a modern revamp of the classic creamy eye shadow and flushed lips. In the past ten days, this has been my default makeup look for pretty much every occasion: work, date night w my hubby & everywhere in between.

Here I am wearing my signature color pairing:

      pgold    pgold2

& these are a few of my current favorites….

gpink   gpink1

Gold Eyes:  I’ve been using the pale gold from the Kardashian Beauty Double Up eye stick (the other end has a black shimmering cream eye shadow and also this is the old packing it’s not called Kardashian Beauty not Khroma Beauty) as a primer underneath my shadows to make the gold more vibrant, Maybelline Color Tattoo pigment in Breaking Bronze, Le Metier De Beaute True Color Eyeshadow in JOJO, Cargo Cosmetics Vintage Escapes Eye shadow palette in shades Cinnamon & Rustic.

Pink Lips: Cle De Peau Extra Rich Lipstick, YSL Rouge Volupte in #2 Sensuous Silk, Chantecaille Luminous Lipgloss in Frambroise, vbeaute Lip Spread in Truth.

Have you tried this classic color combo?

3 Cheap-Chic makeup storage ideas

Researching some favorite beauty experts on social media, my inspiration to get into organization overhaul has brought me think creatively to maximize space, make my beauty collection more accessible and keep a visually appealing retro-fancy-quirky feel that I favor.

Working in the beauty industry for many years, I’ve been fortunate to have the great perk of trying multiple brands. Recently, I cannot say how grateful I am for the amount of products coming my way which prompted my inclination to create some stylish solutions.

Although there is still a to be continued for my product storage, there are a couple small budget ideas that I’ve put into play that I would love to share:

1. Recently, I picked up 2 Apothecary jars from a closing sale at a nearby beauty shop for only $5 each and decided to stack them since the clear glass and wide bottom offered a great spot to display my beloved lipsticks. For extra stability, I put a small mirrored plate that I bought at the Dollar Store between the two jars and oddly enough, I found a similar stacked apothecary jar at West Elm but for $34 a few days later!

2. Upcycled glass jars make excellent makeup brush holders for their functional sizes, unique shapes and are easily revamped with old pieces of fashion jewelry. Currently on my vanity there are six jars that house all of my brushes and hard to store makeup items like mascaras and eyeliners. Pictured is a revamped coconut oil, Ranch dip and candle jar adorned with a retired bracelet and headband.  Just add Gorilla Glue!

3. I’ve also been loving this photo frame holder I found at Homegoods for only $4.99. It was missing a little piece at the front but I used an old crystal Hello Kitty inspired bow from a phone case to add an interesting detail. At the moment it holding a few of my Zpalletes. Photo frame holders like this come in a huge variety and are perfect for adding life to a small counter top.

La Femme: Holy Grail Blush

Rebellious would not be the first word I would use to describe myself but the occasional against the grain makeup choice counts right?

I recently purchased a few La Femme Blushes from the Camera Ready Cosmetics website and have been completely impressed with the high color payoff. At $2.79 each they are a total value especially for makeup artists who want versatile shades that actually show up on deep skin tones to include in a professional kit. The blushes were purchased depotted (just the pans) which is perfect since I love to condense my kit with Z Palettes; the best space savers!

A few days ago, I was experimenting and decided to wear the La Femme blushes in shades Sienna and Bordeaux as my eyeshadow. To my delight, the colors looked just as warm and autumn like on my eyes as it did when I imagined the shades in my head. Since it is still quite hot in SoCal, the eye look helped me crave the breezy fall pumpkin spice latte worthy weather that has yet to occur.

Here’s what I used:

Cle De Peau Extra Rich Lipstick, La Femme blush in shade Indian Rose on my cheeks, Chantecaille Just Skin Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15, VMV Hypoallergenics Ooh La Lash Mascara, Eyeshadows from Cargo Cosmetics Vintage Escapes Palette in Black Crow and Chestnut for my eyebrows, Sienna and Bordeaux La Femme blushes on my eyelids, Duo darktone eyelash adhesive & Ardell Demi Wispies false lashes.

If you are thinking of updating either your personal or professional makeup kit, La Femme blush refills are available in almost 50 shades from the Camera Ready Cosmetics website. I’ve got my eyes on shades Frambossia, Mulberry and Cinnabar for next time! They have quick delivery, ship internationally and a really large selection of affordable makeup artist essentials.

I love a good blush, don’t you?
