Learning how to be a Makeup Mixologist

The craft of makeup may seem as simple as applying a swatch of color on the lips but those passionate about perfecting artistry including Beautyblender Creator and seasoned celebrity makeup artist Rea Ann Silva know there is far more detail than what meets the naked eye.

photo 5

Revolutionizing the idea of airbrushed makeup that looked flawless during the age of HD cameras- Rea Ann used her knowledge and innovative thinking to develop the now iconic Beautyblender sponge. Since then, many brands have tried to duplicate her genius product but without comparison to the streamlined signature versatility of the Original Beautyblender! It was my pleasure to attend a launch party for the newest addition to the Beautyblender family, sur.facepro Tuesday night @ Planet Dailies Mixology 101 in Los Angeles.

My first impression? The sur.facepro provides a quick, hygienic & modern approach to makeup matching and mixing that is user friendly for both makeup pros and makeup addicts. I predict this will become the newest beauty tool obsession!

At the cocktail party, I ran into some beauties including the one and only gorgeous Rea Ann Silva, Z Palette Creator Zena Shteysel who also is Makeup Department Head of Dancing With the Stars, The Beautyblender Pro Team and talented young artist Brett Brette Sims who sketched a gorgeous portrait of me of course holding an Original Beautyblender.

This fun event brought music, makeup and playful smiles with a mixology class showcasing the cocktail of the night – a sur.face pro.tini. I am excited to play with my new Beautyblender tools and will do a full review on Examiner.com once I give the sur.facepro a proper test run. Discover the complete range of Beautyblender at Sephora.

Cheers to New Adventures

‘You cannot achieve your dreams by keeping them to yourself,’ is advice that a professional mentor told me years ago and in the last six weeks, that advice brought me closer to a tangible reality I’ve been waiting so patiently for.

Always trust in yourself that whatever you desire in life can be made truth. Believe in the goals you set and without hesitation: say it out loud, tell someone who will help you succeed and ignore the No’s that come in your direction. The more you fight for what you want, there is confidence that breeds positive outcomes.

There’s no doubt this new year has been one of the most eventful and exciting weeks in a long time however at the same time I’ve struggled with catching a cold from my daughter or my husband and its been a crazy circle of everyone getting sick . Thankfully it was nothing serious and I’m ready to stay connected and post more frequently to keep my website up to date.

I have some new photos and great stories to share of inspiring encounters and full circle experiences that have brought some joyful moments in my life but for now: Hello and thank you to my loyal/new subscribers who have been visiting my site and supporting my craft.

Lipstick Diaries

Last week, as I was confirming some important dates for January I found myself sharing my excitement over being invited to IMATS LA with my four year old to which a scream and smile burst from her little mouth made me laugh.

Of course IMATS is a foreign term and she did not know that it stands for International Makeup Artist Trade Show but I did explain that it is a huge makeup event with never ending brushes, makeup and artists. Unlike the average preschooler, my daughter is quite a creative mind and love Kandee Johnson YouTube videos, singing Disney’s Frozen songs and Designer lipsticks like no other little girl I’ve seen. Not only is she an expert when it comes to knowing where to apply ‘highlight in the inner corner,’ and other makeup tricks but she genuinely says she loves makeup because she wants to be like mommy.

Here’s a photo of her holding one of my fave lipsticks from YSL, Fuchsia in Rage Rouge Volupte with my Dior Powder compact.

& here she is her with a Beauty Blender, pink by her request of course, I bought  as one of her Christmas gifts.

Whether her future holds being an artist or just looking fabulous she already has some luxury taste when it comes to beauty!

Z Palette & Vueset: Makeup Kit Essentials

Over the last few days, there has been one major notion at the forefront of my daily to do list: Organize!

As I’ve been doing some frequent freelance makeup work back to back and my calender has been filling up quickly, my anxiety of condensing my makeup kit has brought me to downsize some of my favorites with my growing Z Palette collection and my new found makeup organization brand favorite Vueset. One thing I’ve learned over the 8 years of professional makeup work is packing too much has always been a blessing of a problem to have since I’ve had the pleasure of receiving some generous freebies over the years but lugging around a heavy, cluttered train case can create some unnecessary annoyances.

A few years back, I requested a Z Palette as a birthday gift from my sister and to my delight she bought me two black large size palettes that are still sturdy to this day. From then I was in love and enjoyed the thrill of depotting and organizing my collection with the convenient clear top and magnetic slim case perfect for professional or personal travel. I now own 7 Z Palettes including my latest purchase of two zebra print large Z Palettes that I ordered with the generous Pro Discount on Frends Beauty website.

Although I have a fond adoration of packaging in my personal collection of makeup, for my kit ease and clean presentation for makeup set up is what matters most. For this, I am forever in love with Z Palettes and highly recommend them. Personally I’ve shopped the Zpalette.com, frendsbeauty.com and Beauty.com for my Z Palettes and all websites offer fast shipping and great customer service.

The top Z Palette is a Pro Leopard Z Palette which is slightly bigger and holds bronzers and highlighting powders from Cover FX, Laura Geller Beauty & Becca Cosmetics.

The Bottom one is a Large Z Palette that currently has cream foundations from Cover FX, Sleek Makeup, Dior and concealers from Illamasqua.

I’ve been on the hunt for an empty lip palette for awhile and most did not have the right size or were too expensive for the materials they were made of. I was hoping to find something compact that could hold a large quantity of product and thankfully I stumbled upon the Vueset palettes when browsing on the Camera Ready Cosmetics website. The ‘Tahiti’ palette is made of sturdy high quality acryllic and has 24 empty wells that hold a generous amount in each spot. The empty wells were able to hold almost an entire lipstick bullet which is a major plus when travelling. For my personal preference I did not melt the lipsticks into the palette but many makeup artists have stated that the palette can be put in them microwave at 30 second intervals for a smooth top finish; I chose not to do so because I find the texture changes once the formula is heated. Vueset carries many size options and can be filled with anything including cream foundations, concealers, pigments and glitters.

The above photo shows how compact the Vueset Tahiti palette is (it’s the size of an average lipstick in height)

& here’s one of my favorite MOTD from last week’s work grind. I’m wearing Dior Rouge #786 on my lips, Ardell Wispies False Lashes, Dior Forever Foundation, Cover FX Bronzer, Chantecaille on my eyes and cheeks, Bobbi Brown Color Corrector in Peach under my eyes, Koh Gen Do UV Powder, Kardashian Beauty Navy eyeliner on the bottom lash line & Dior Liquid Liner on the upper lash line.

On the Go Glamming

Whenever the image of someone applying makeup in the car comes to mind I cringe at the thought of uneven face symmetry and horrible blending but this morning I was guilty of having a 405 Freeway traffic glamming session.

I have mastered makeup application on myself knowing exactly where to apply products without looking with the exception of my eyebrows which I refuse to do without proper mirror time. Often even at home, I can literally do my entire face pretty spot on minus brows with no mirror. This morning I applied my eye shadow primer, eye shadows, eyeliner, foundation, concealer, bronzer, blush and loose powder all on the way to work (which is usually a thirty minute to an hour drive).

Of course for more intricate makeup days when a precise liner or extravagant eye makeup plays a part in my overall look of the day than an on the go glamming session is not the best idea but this morning was an early one and I had no choice but to glam it on the freeway. I applied my eyes and cheek products with a brush and blended all of my face makeup with just my fingertips. The lashes were a last minute addition I threw on right after I parked.

Here’s what I used: Cover FX Total Cover Cream Foundation G40, Illamasqua Skin Base Lift Concealer Medium 1, Koh Gen Do UV Translucent powder, Chantecaille Matte Eye Shadow in Celestine and the Wild Horses Palette, Chantecaille Blush in Ecstacy, Cover FX Matte Bronzer, Kardashian Beauty Navy Eyeliner, Cle De Pea Lip Luminizer in #203 & Katy Perry for Eyelure Eyelashes.

Brush love for 3 kit favorites

Having the right brushes is a major part of a working makeup artist’s kit. The right taper, firmness, and bristles all play a part in what executes the outcome of a perfect blend. Although my kit is filled with many options, of all of my brush arsenal, there are three particular tools that I must reach for each time.

  1. Makeup Up Forever Professional Angled Eyebrow Brush #270: This angled brush is the best for achieving the perfect brows. Even for models with barely there eyebrow hairs, this precise tool creates both sharp and soft stokes that is essential for getting brows on point. Though I primarily use this brush for brows the tightly packed firm bristles are also useful for creating winged eyeliner and for smudging cream eye shadow at the base of the lashes. The small brush head is idea for applying just the right amount of powder, gel or cream.
  2. Dior Beaute Cheek Brush: What can I say about this tool; it’s been in my kit for over six years and it literally does not shed and still feels baby soft no matter how many shampoos it goes through. Recently in the past two years, Dior has changed to a new cheek brush which is beautiful with a matte black stem and fuller bristles but I prefer the feel and application of this one. I use this brush mainly for sculpting the face with bronzer or blush but it can also give an airy finish when used to apply loose or pressed powders.
  3. Japonesque Pro Blush Brush #324: I was so excited when I was sent this brush for review as I’ve always been a Japonesque fan. When using this brush over the last weekend, the common response was that it was incredibly soft. I love to use this for applying loose powder on curved areas including under the eyes, over the nose and on the chin. It distributes powders without looking cakey or heavy and the long stem gives it a luxurious appearance. Since the brush head is tapered and smaller than the Dior brush mentioned above it makes is a gorgeous choice for detailing small areas without applying too much product.
