Me, a beauty expert?

Christmas eve as we celebrated all the glory of family and blessings, my mom turned to me and mentioned that she read my article on winter lip treatments for examiner.com and went to Costco to buy a stack of Jenna Hipp Pout Polish gift sets to bring to the Philippines. I often forget that the reach of my work is bigger and in this case, closer than I give myself credit. Friends I haven’t seen in years, past coworkers, even old mentors drop hints that they follow me on instagram or read my column religiously. It is such a trip sometimes to realize what type of impact I have on immediate, local and international followers.

This morning, I got an email that summed up my year with surprising stats that my writing has gotten attention from viewers in 101 countries & I thought that’s pretty powerful!

I suppose with just a limited time left in 2014, it is a good time to reflect. In no other year have a felt more empowered in my identity as a beauty expert. That title used to make me cringe because I hate hate hate when people with no experience jump into the beauty industry offering bad beauty advice and call themselves experts. My life has revolved around inching towards the goal of branding my identity as a well rounded voice in this crazy beauty world and 2014 really made me really LOVE what I do again.

For a bit, I felt lost in the shuffle halfway dedicating myself to my writing and networking and falling deep into crazy land freelancing for a makeup brand that functioned with high levels of chaos. Despite a few dips in the road, my mind is now refreshed and inspired to continue fighting for my dreams. I’ve built my reputation with clients from around the world as a master makeup artist ready to conceptualize any ideas they have of the perfect look. Weddings, photo shoots and teaching personal makeup lessons has made my heart happy this year. So many clients have made me again find confidence that if you do what you love then it is forever fuel for everything else.

My writing is always the heart of my love for beauty. I hit a milestone 300+ articles written for examiner.com and have met some pretty incredible people along the way. I literally am so blessed to work with iconic, innovative, prestigious and of course impressive green beauty brands that support my talents. 2015 is looking pretty bright and I cannot wait to continue developing meaningful relationships with all of the fab PR firms and companies that produce straight up the best in makeup, skincare, hair and beauty tools.

Motivation is an understatement. I am ready for the new year! Thank you for new and old subscribers, followers and friends for always encouraging me to do what I love.

5 Quick Outdoor Makeup Loves

Extra bright sun and a lunch picnic with my mini me today called for quick no makeup-makeup with a punch of pink on the lips. Yes, I may have a slight obsession with bright lips but this 82 degree SoCal weather is another lovable excuse to celebrate brights year round. With Thanksgiving just a couple days away, avoiding anything resembling a retail store is my idea of a relaxing dayoff. We split a peanut butter sandwich, tangerines and a couple of chocolate covered vanilla ice creams. Pretty idea Tuesday afternoon, right?

Today’s Beauty Line Up:

1. Supergoop CC Cream Daily Correct Broad Spectrum SPF 35 Sunscreen in Medium to Dark Self Adjusting Shade. This is an easy, non-irritating sunscreen that gives a sheer skin-like even tone to the complexion. The texture is quite rich so a minimal amount is perfect to dot on the high points of the face; just blend with fingertips. It’s the perfect no-fuss way to protect the skin while looking polished. As an added bonus this dries down to a natural matte finish and can be used as a primer for foundation if desired.

2. L’oreal Visible Lift Blur Blush in shade Soft Peach adds a flush of soft rosiness to the cheeks without looking like makeup. Though this is a pocket friendly priced beauty item, this is certainly a velvet soft-to-touch cream consistency that is comparable to a few high end counter parts. Today, I tapped on a small amount to the center of the cheeks and put the excess on my lips to give a quick stain.

3. Tata Harper Replenishing Nutrient Complex is a skin lifesaver! I adore the cool to touch rollerball applicator and the organic aromatic essential oils it imparts onto the skin. On most days, I swipe this over the entire face and let the ingredients soak act as a barrier to lock in my other skincare products. I’ve also found great use of this when rolled on the lower eye contour. It give a bit of a glow which camouflages any signs of fatigue.

4. Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick in shade Jilted. Of all my Urban Decay Lipsticks, this is the least used shade since it is quite a unique neon duo chrome finish. This is an I want to be noticed, ‘look at me’ shade which brings immediate life to a tired complexion. This satin lipstick is full coverage, long lasting and adds intrigue for a basic no makeup-makeup day.

5. I feel I don’t give enough love to my eyeko mascara collection. The Skinny Brush Mascara is everything a thin lash craves for a more voluminous, lengthy eye look. The packaging is genius especially since I despise mascara tubes that dry out in a month and the brush is the perfect ratio of long and short bristles that grabs ALL of my eyelashes.

October Beauty Favorites

Considering the last month passed me by with a quickness, from a ridiculous schedule of writing, work and makeup bookings, I managed to test and fall in love with many new and old beauty favorites. Currently my voice feels completely raspy and while I feel like recuperating after a night of discomfort from cough attacks and a stuffy nose I’ve chosen to work on some writing from my new Mac Book Air thanks to my husband.

Cheers to the beauty products that captured my love recently:

  1. Carol’s Daughter Manoi Oil: Applying this smoothing hair oil gets me a compliment literally every time I wear it. Having really dark black hair (yes that is possible) that is naturally really deep in tone makes it difficult to add dimension in between hair cuts. Adding a boost of shine always makes me love this delicious hair treat.
  2. Jurlique Fruit Enzyme Exfoliator: Intentionally, I decided to use up all of the physical exfoliators in my stash before using this one solely as my clear skin fix for the past month and I can’t say enough about what a difference this stimulating product does. Twice a week, place a thin layer of this tingly lightweight fluid over the entire face for a few minutes and reveal a totally refreshed, bright, smooth skin perfect for the dull skin weather that comes around when the seasons change. Those sensitive to abrasive scrubs will love this bead-free formula made of organic ingredients!
  3. Lush Oatfix Fresh Face Mask: I recently ran out of a clay mask that was a favorite and thought I would give the Oatfix mask a try as a purifying skin treat. At first application the scent drew me in as it literally smells like a bowl of breakfast with the banana and fresh oatmeal base. Who doesn’t love a lovely scent of sweet banana?
  4. Kure Bazaar Nail Polish: Let’s face it the French have an edge on many things including the amazing nail lacquers from Kure Bazaar. Opaque, full coverage application in just one swipe is what keeps me coming back to this beautiful formula made of natural and organic ingredients. Try it once, and you’ll know what I’m talking about!
  5. Inglot Matte Eyeshadow: Matte eyeshadows and I have a bit of a love hate relationship as I love the idea of them but never are drawn to purchasing matte eye shadows when I shop. I knew when I was in Newport Fashion Island that Inglot was one of the shops I really needed to explore since they have a pretty large selection of high pigmented shadows including mattes. I picked up a matte Navy and have my eye on a couple greens and warm browns for next time.
  6. Eyemimo False Eyelashes: On a fluke browse through Instagram, I saw a post for the Eyemimo Cosmetics Eyelash sample sale and since I’ve been obsessed with eyelashes this season I decided to order a couple pairs since they were only $1.50. I liked them so much that I placed a second order while the sale was still going on since the quality and look of the lashes were quite impressive.
  7. Dior Forever Foundation: This was the first foundation from Dior I was hooked on when I started working for the brand several years ago. The texture is really breathable with a medium to full coverage finish and most importantly the refined effect it provides lasts well, forever! Since my days are usually quite long it is a total plus to have a long wearing formula that feels weightless.
