Falling for red lips all over again

One of my all time favorite things about fall is seeing red lip colors emerge out of every makeup brand. The iconic lip color is synonymous with not only old Hollywood vintage glamour but with autumn fashion trend each year because the rich shade of red is always complementary to the breezy weather. It’s like the ultimate declaration that summer is over when I hide my bright pinks and turn my attention to my red lip collection. Making a major comeback this year is orange-red lip shades; a warm twist on the dark reds seen in the past few fall seasons. See a full list of my orange red lips faves, by clicking here.

Also, here are some swatches and info on a couple standouts in my personal collection: Top Avon Ultra Color Lipstick in Tangerine Tango, Middle Chantecaille Persimmon, Bottom Marc Jacobs Beauty Lovemarc Lip Gel in All the Way.

For timid beauty fans, try a sheer lip gloss instead of a full on, opaque lipstick. Try the amazing Kelly Tee Garden Organics lip gloss in shade ‘red’ it has a seriously useful light up wand and side mirror for touch ups in any setting.

& if you’re like me with big lips, a long wearing lipstick is a total necessity. I recently saw the new formulation of the Dior Rouge Dior Lipsticks and love the classic #999 shade that made Dior so famous for killer lipstick with its luxe feel and full coverage finish. I don’t have the new packaging, I’m debating if I should purchase it  (more on that later) but if you scroll down to my post ‘Dior In My Heart’ there is a photo of my hand with swatches that shows the red #999 color in the center of my hand. There are three majorly addictive orange-red lipsticks that have made it to my collection from Avon, Chantecaille and Marc Jacobs which are so beautiful and carry an impressive wear and pigment. (Thank you Avon and Chantecaille for sending over these beauties my way). All have a moisturizing feel but don’t slip of the lips easily. Love that!

What’s your fall season beauty favorite?

Preschool Fashion & Beauty

Earlier today I was happily asleep but got an urgent wake up from Tessa. She reminded me that I promised her to make scrambled eggs for breakfast last night and to fix her hair with her bangs swept to the side. It occurred to me that I have trained her well and she has become a fashionista or as she likes to call herself “style lady.’ (Her made up super hero who wears sparkly shoes and big accessories.) Last week it was a blue fur vest and a pink flower ring. This week the winner is two little green bows and her hello kitty necklace. She always keeps me wondering what’s next.

Here she is with her favorite sparkly boots and ballet flats with a few of her favorite accessories.

I get asked frequently about what I used on her for hair and bath products since I lean toward eco-friendly and organic ingredients when it comes to my personal care so I thought I would mention 3 products that she and I both love on the daily.

  1. Bayberry Organic Leave-In Detangler: Although Tessa was blessed with my fine hair it can get a bit knotted and tangled overnight during sleep. I’m not a fan of strong smelling hair products or alcohol heavy ingredient lists especially for my daughter. This spray Detangler is perfect for a quick morning when there’s minimal time to get out the door; it’s made without Sulfates, Parabens, Phthalates, Artificial Fragrances or Artificial Dyes which gives it my personal mommy stamp of approval. There’s a lovely blend of organic oils and plant based ingredients that I feel confident in using on my little girl.
  2. J R Watkins Body Butter: This time of year especially, dry patches and itchy skin happen on repeat which means her regular lotion doesn’t cut it for the coming months. This body butter comes in many scents (the current one she’s using is Coconut Milk & Honey) that are not too strong. Since this is a rich creamy texture, a very small amount is needed to work its magic and its made with 98.9% natural ingredients including cocoa butter, coconut oil, Shea butter and aloe.
  3. Burt’s Bee’s Baby Bee Shampoo and Wash: I usually pick up the fragrance free version of this mild bath product. Instead of moisture stripping sulfates that can be very irritating on little bodies, this is made with gentle plant based foaming agents that leave her skin feeling soft. It’s sold in different sizes from travel to the jumbo size with a pump making it a pretty convenient choice for mom’s looking for a versatile bath care option.

Music, Fashion & Makeup Magic

Last night I had the pleasure of doing makeup for the LA Live & Lucky Strike Presents Karaoke Runway Gala in Downtown Los Angeles benefiting the St. Baldrick’s Foundation to support the battle against childhood cancers.

All of the models were so sweet and I was flattered to have a line of beauties waiting for me to work some makeup magic on them. It was a challenge doing makeup in an extra dark VIP room but I had help from my sister, Grace and her friend Courtney with a makeshift iPhone flashlight action to make sure my work was on point. There’s always something about the energy of a behind the scenes fashion show that immediately draws me in; every detail is driven by passionate people.

Three of the beauties I worked with last night, love the chunky necklaces and printed fabrics.

Dramatic eyes + pale lips was the look of night which meant I reached for my Chantecaille, Urban Decay, Cargo Cosmetics and Dior eye shadows for the perfect smoky eyes and Maybelline Whisper and Laura Geller lipsticks mixed with a little Illamasqua Skin Base Lift concealer on the lips. The skin was matte and flawless thanks to Cover FX Total Cover Cream Foundation, Sleek Makeup Cream to Powder, Illamasqua Skin Base Lift concealer blended with a damp brush spritzed with L’Occitane rosewater facial mist and set the complexion with Makeup Forever High Definition powder. To shape the face I used Dior Matte Bronzer, Jane Iredale Mineral Bronzer, Cover FX Matte Bronzer, Dior Blush in Peechy Keen, Dior Rosy Glow Blush and La Femme Blush in Sienna. To make sure the makeup stayed in place I primed the skin with BECCA Cosmetics Ever Matte Poreless Priming Perfector on the skin, Urban Decay Primer Potion in Eden
and vBeaute Lip Spread on the lips.

Dior in my heart

Today’s agenda included a visit to one of my favorite people from Dior at her counter where we went out to lunch and caught up on life.

It always feels nostalgic for me to be next to a Dior counter as I spent a bulk of my transition from teen to early adulthood behind the counter. Memories of clients and coworkers that motivated me to work hard for them has led me to maintain connections with those who impacted my professional development. I will always be grateful for the opportunities I was given thanks to my ambition combined with the wise inspiration of Mr. Dior’s whimsical imagination reincarnated through the powerful people I came to know as mentors and friends.

Earlier today there was a young girl working behind the Dior counter who stared at me wide eyed and smiling. It felt strange to me as images of my first days at Dior are still fresh in my mind. She questioned me on how I became so successful at Dior and what I’ve done to earn respect at a young age from the communications world and cosmetics industry. I told her ‘you are as successful as your last impression’ and that is the best advice I can offer.

In my daily life, impressions matter tremendously as some working relationships are strictly via email as I work with PR executives from all over the US and internationally. I think about that last email, phone call, text I make often and re-think what the messages I put out will bring back in return.I can only hope the impressions I make will continue leading me to even greater success.

Here are a few beautiful things spotted at the luxury beauty counter that will always have a piece of my heart.

Gold Eyes + Pink Lips

As far back as I can remember in my makeup memories, gold and pink has always been a go to color combination when I can’t decide what to wear. Fast, multi-dimensional and just neutral enough to pair with any fashion picks this wearable duo is a modern revamp of the classic creamy eye shadow and flushed lips. In the past ten days, this has been my default makeup look for pretty much every occasion: work, date night w my hubby & everywhere in between.

Here I am wearing my signature color pairing:

& these are a few of my current favorites….

Gold Eyes:  I’ve been using the pale gold from the Kardashian Beauty Double Up eye stick (the other end has a black shimmering cream eye shadow and also this is the old packing it’s not called Kardashian Beauty not Khroma Beauty) as a primer underneath my shadows to make the gold more vibrant, Maybelline Color Tattoo pigment in Breaking Bronze, Le Metier De Beaute True Color Eyeshadow in JOJO, Cargo Cosmetics Vintage Escapes Eye shadow palette in shades Cinnamon & Rustic.

Pink Lips: Cle De Peau Extra Rich Lipstick, YSL Rouge Volupte in #2 Sensuous Silk, Chantecaille Luminous Lipgloss in Frambroise, vbeaute Lip Spread in Truth.

Have you tried this classic color combo?

Eating my way to glowing skin

Rewind to a few years ago I was totally obsessed with eating healthy food and in fact my parents although they love to cook a good Filipino meal are health conscious and eat minimal rice and meat in their daily nutrition intake. Fish, fruits, low sodium, sugar free and vegetables were an expected sight to see in my childhood kitchen but unfortunately my current diet has been lacking in healthy options. Bringing back colorful foods into my food has made me feel like myself again.

Most people would rate losing weight or physical appearance a top priority to eat healthy but my personal reason is glowing skin.

Image

Eating vibrant food via citrus, greens, and colorful plants are a quick way to brighten up the complexion. Investing in a serious skin care regime can of course boost skin’s overall appearance but drowning your digestive system with not so skin friendly food can result in dull, lifeless skin and problematic makeup application. Slowly I’ve reverted back to my healthy food ways and now at peace with taking care of my skin from the inside out.

At the moment I can’t stop eating grapefruit, organic greens and Annie’s Lemon and Chive salad dressing. Yum! Obviously, I will always have my morning coffee but I’ve downsized from a venti or grande coffee to a tall. Still not fab but I balance it out with the ridiculous amount of water I drink.

What’s your go-to healthy food meal?

Faking a full night’s sleep

As I opened one eye to my smiling 4 year old two inches from my face playing with my hair at 6:30 am, there was a part of me that wanted to send her back to her bed to play while I continued holding on to the four hours of sleep I got last night but then I just couldn’t do it. Who could resist that innocent laugh she makes, right? So I mustered up some energy while I let her choose her preschool attire for the day; the little diva went with a red floral print dress, purple sweater and Tinkerbell socks in case you were wondering.

She climbed up my leg, sat on my lap and watched me start my morning ritual of skincare essentials and makeup routine per the norm. “Is that a thick eye cream?” “How come you put a serum on like that?” “You should wear the matte eyeshadow primer instead of the gold one mommy.” “Are you blending the creamy concealer with a flat brush?” and of course at this age “Why… Why… Why…” never ends. Yes, totally my daughter with this eloquent beauty verbage!

Between the Why’s How’s and What’s this is the finished beauty look I came up with through the morning interrogation.

For tired mornings a two must haves are BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector and Illamasqua Skin Base Lift Concealer. BECCA’s brilliant liquid highlighter can be used over or under makeup and even on no makeup days to bring life back to fatigued morning skin. Today I applied an ultra-thin layer of Illamasqua concealer under my eyes to camoflauge dark circles and divided one pump of BECCA’s Shimmering Skin Perfector in shade Opal along the tops of my cheeks, down the center of my nose and on my chin to illuminate any dark shadows.

What I used: Caudalie Cleansing Water, vbeaute Eye Never Eye Cream, Dior One Essential Serum, Caudalie Vino Fluid SPF 15 on my skin, Cover FX Total Cream Foundation in N40 and G40 (used with a light hand blended with just fingertips), Illamasqua Skin Base Lift Concealer in Medium 1, Laura Geller Beauty 25 Shades of Baked Palette in Khaki and Emerald on top of Urban Decay Primer Potion in Eden, Eyelure Katy Perry Color Pop false eyelashes, Cargo Cosmetics Vintage Escapes Eye Shadow Palette in Chestnut and Black Crow in my brows, Sleek Makeup Cream to Powder (Also used with a light hand blended with just fingertips), Dior Addict Extreme Lipstick in Incognito, Per-fekt Beauty Lip Perfection Gel in Sunset, BECCA Cosmetics Shimmering SKin Perfector in Opal.

Give me glowing and fresh over shadows and matte skin any day!

3 Cheap-Chic makeup storage ideas

Researching some favorite beauty experts on social media, my inspiration to get into organization overhaul has brought me think creatively to maximize space, make my beauty collection more accessible and keep a visually appealing retro-fancy-quirky feel that I favor.

Working in the beauty industry for many years, I’ve been fortunate to have the great perk of trying multiple brands. Recently, I cannot say how grateful I am for the amount of products coming my way which prompted my inclination to create some stylish solutions.

Although there is still a to be continued for my product storage, there are a couple small budget ideas that I’ve put into play that I would love to share:

1. Recently, I picked up 2 Apothecary jars from a closing sale at a nearby beauty shop for only $5 each and decided to stack them since the clear glass and wide bottom offered a great spot to display my beloved lipsticks. For extra stability, I put a small mirrored plate that I bought at the Dollar Store between the two jars and oddly enough, I found a similar stacked apothecary jar at West Elm but for $34 a few days later!

 Image Image Image

2. Upcycled glass jars make excellent makeup brush holders for their functional sizes, unique shapes and are easily revamped with old pieces of fashion jewelry. Currently on my vanity there are six jars that house all of my brushes and hard to store makeup items like mascaras and eyeliners. Pictured is a revamped coconut oil, Ranch dip and candle jar adorned with a retired bracelet and headband.  Just add Gorilla Glue!

3. I’ve also been loving this photo frame holder I found at Homegoods for only $4.99. It was missing a little piece at the front but I used an old crystal Hello Kitty inspired bow from a phone case to add an interesting detail. At the moment it holding a few of my Zpalletes. Photo frame holders like this come in a huge variety and are perfect for adding life to a small counter top.

Lipstick Memories

As I drank my morning coffee fix from Starbucks earlier today, it reminded me of a memory as a young girl in elementary school hoping desperately to wear lipstick and leave my imprint on a coffee mug just like my mom. She would wear a dusty rose creamy lipstick and that faint pout stamped across the top of her pale ivory mug was like a true statement of glamour I thought as I nibbled at my buttery grilled cheese sitting next to her. My earliest memories of makeup fixation happened so young and now my little princess looks at me the same way I looked at my mom as she swiped across a generous swatch of lipstick across her mouth.

Today, my mom still favors a pinky rose lip; the classic hue brings me back to childhood every time! Here is today’s lip combo with my Grande White Mocha: Marc Jacobs Beauty Lovemarc Lip Gel in All the Way & Le Metier De Beaute Lip Crème Lip Gloss in Papaya Crème. I went with the dewy theme and paired the vibrant orange glossy lip with glowing skin and iridescent green eye shadows.

La Femme: Holy Grail Blush

Rebellious would not be the first word I would use to describe myself but the occasional against the grain makeup choice counts right?

I recently purchased a few La Femme Blushes from the Camera Ready Cosmetics website and have been completely impressed with the high color payoff. At $2.79 each they are a total value especially for makeup artists who want versatile shades that actually show up on deep skin tones to include in a professional kit. The blushes were purchased depotted (just the pans) which is perfect since I love to condense my kit with Z Palettes; the best space savers!

A few days ago, I was experimenting and decided to wear the La Femme blushes in shades Sienna and Bordeaux as my eyeshadow. To my delight, the colors looked just as warm and autumn like on my eyes as it did when I imagined the shades in my head. Since it is still quite hot in SoCal, the eye look helped me crave the breezy fall pumpkin spice latte worthy weather that has yet to occur.

Here’s what I used:

Cle De Peau Extra Rich Lipstick, La Femme blush in shade Indian Rose on my cheeks, Chantecaille Just Skin Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15, VMV Hypoallergenics Ooh La Lash Mascara, Eyeshadows from Cargo Cosmetics Vintage Escapes Palette in Black Crow and Chestnut for my eyebrows, Sienna and Bordeaux La Femme blushes on my eyelids, Duo darktone eyelash adhesive & Ardell Demi Wispies false lashes.

If you are thinking of updating either your personal or professional makeup kit, La Femme blush refills are available in almost 50 shades from the Camera Ready Cosmetics website. I’ve got my eyes on shades Frambossia, Mulberry and Cinnabar for next time! They have quick delivery, ship internationally and a really large selection of affordable makeup artist essentials.

I love a good blush, don’t you?
